CCNA 7.3.b: Using Cisco Discovery Protocol or LLDP for device discovery

Overview:

CDP or LLDP can be used to discover details about neighboring devices

 

Study Notes:

  • CDP is covered in-depth in section 2.8.a: CDP
  • LLDP is covered in-depth in section 2.8.b: LLDP
  • To use CDP to discover neighboring devices, CDP must be enabled on both devices for neighbor information to be exchanged
  • CDP is enabled by default on Cisco devices
  • To use LLDP to discover neighbor devices, LLDP must be enabled on both devices for neighbor information to be exchanged
  • LLDP is not enabled by default on Cisco devices

 

CDP commands

config t
  cdp run
  show cdp neighbors
  show cdp interface
  show cdp entry *
  no cdp run

 

LLDP commands

config t
  lldp run
  show lldp neighbor
  no lldp run

    I closed out the lab and restarted it.
    This time I only enabled LLDP on both the switch and router and it worked.
